7 Things You Can Do for Relatives & Friends Who Are Snowed In

The Midwest and Great Lakes region presents some of the wildest winter weather. It's best to be prepared, since anything can happen. Paul Davis of Rockford is here to help you repair any damages after a snowstorm, but in the meantime, what can you do while you and your neighbors are snowed in?

Prolonged power outages can be dangerous for families that are snowed in after a sub-zero blizzard. If you can't pick up loved ones and bring them to a location that has heat, call to give them some helpful tips for preventing hypothermia. For example, they can wall off a small room with thick blankets to create an insulated space that is easier to keep warm.
If you have older or mobility challenged relative, they could be snowed in by even a minor snowstorm. Make sure they know you are coming by to dig them out so they don't attempt it by themselves. Lay on some gentle guilt if that's what it takes to keep them indoors until you arrive.
Have you recently moved from the northern US to an area that rarely has ice or snow? It only takes half an inch of ice to trap people in their homes down South. Your years of experience with driving safely on ice and snow-covered roads could save lives. Offer to run any emergency errands for your loved ones to keep them off the road.
Sometimes, all an unprepared friend needs to get out of a snowy spot is the right tool for the job. Make a deal that if you friend will cook you a hearty breakfast you'll bring over your biggest shovel and get their walk cleared before the pancakes get cold.
Do you have an older relative on a fixed income who is struggling to pay their heating bill? They could be in danger of hypothermia from having their heat cut off while they are snowed in. Many municipalities offer emergency fuel assistance programs that can help keep the heat turned on during severe winter weather. Get online and start making phone call to ensure that your loved one doesn't go without.
Are you an older person looking for ways to help younger friends and family? Young folk may be at a loss for how to make something edible out of the odds & ends in the pantry and fridge when a freak snowstorm hits. If you have a knack for cooking from back in the days when everyone knew how, walk them through some simple recipes over the phone.
Maybe you are enjoying a balmy weekend in Florida when you find out on Facebook that relatives up north are snowed in. Spend some time online chatting and suggest ways for them to stay entertained (and how to keep the kids busy). Just don't talk about how nice the weather is in your neck of the woods. They may un-friend you forever.

American Burn Foundation (ABA) fundraising event to benefit local firefighters, burn victims and their families. The event will be

held on Wednesday, March 30 from 5:30 pm until 8:00 pm at Buddy Guy's Legends, 700 South Wabash Avenue in Chicago. Cost per

person is $10 cover charge and includes drink specials and half-price appetizers. Live music entertainment and the venue space will

be donated by Buddy Guy's Legends. The Paul Davis offices are donating an Apple iPad as a raffle prize.

The ABA is hosting approximately 75 firefighters and their families from the U.S. and Canada with fundraising activities that will

raise money for firefighters who have been injured and families who have lost their loved ones in the line of duty. The ABA and its

burn-related research, education, care, rehabilitation, and prevention, to name a few.

September is National Preparedness Month

Every year, Paul Davis of [location] participates in National Preparedness Month in September to spread the word to individuals and families about the importance for being ready for disasters.

The program is sponsored by The Department of Homeland Security's Federal Emergency Management Agency’s (FEMA) Ready Campaign. Visit www.Ready.gov for information.

The key is to be informed and have a plan that you and your family discuss and practice. It is equally important to have an Emergency Ready Kit stocked and ready in case a disaster strikes. Below is a quick list of the items that every Emergency Ready Kit should contain.

Water – one gallon per person per day for at least three days
Food – at least a three-day supply of non-perishable food
First aid kit – to include bandages; sterile gloves; antibiotic ointment; iodine/alcohol pads; medical tape; pain reliever; emergency blanket; thermometer; prescription medications, and other prescribed medical supplies.
Clothing – A change of clothing and a sleeping bag for each person
Battery-powered or hand crank radio, a NOAA Weather Radio, extra batteries
Cell Phone and charger
Flashlight and extra batteries
Filter masks – to cover mouth and nose
Heavy weight garbage bags, plastic sheeting and duct tape – to protect against debris and toxins
Waterproof, portable containers – for critical documents such as IDs, insurance policies, bank account records, computer backup files, emergency and law enforcement information, and other priority documents. Store a second set of records at an off-site location.
